Picking the Perfect Color

by Michael Lapidakis on February 11, 2009

I am working on a web site for my senior capstone project at school, and have been scouring the web for just the right color combination to make an attractive looking web 2.0 (buzz word intended)-esq site. The content of the site itself, if presented poorly, will definitely feel like a flat, boring application.

Now at my core I’m a programmer, and I don’t have a creative bone in my body. I could tell you if the site looks good,  or maybe make a suggestion, but I just don’t have the ability to look at a blank photoshop page and make anything special out of it.

Here in-lies the problem. I have been staring at this colour lovers site for a minute now, and have yet to come up with anything worth its salt. Grant it they have some great colors, but I just cant apply these combinations to a real world site. I try “borrowing” ideas from other sites, with static backgrounds and transparent text boxes, or the clean look, with a white background and thin boarders, but nothing ever works. Where can I pick up these skills? Is there a book? A website out there made for programmers that teaches them how to be creative? Is there some eBay for finding a web designer on the cheep? Hopefully one day my creative side catches up with my logical side.
