Where’s my Facebook Reset Button?

by Michael Lapidakis on March 4, 2009

I’ve been a member of facebook for well over four years now and lately I have been asking myself “Where is my reset button?”. With all the attention facebook’s been getting for its terms and conditions agreement, at what point do the users as a whole need to change the way they think. When I started my account, I was a high school grad that was on his way to college. I had no idea that it would ever be used as a tool for employers to alienate me, no intention of using the social network as anything more than a way too meet freshman like me. As time went on, and more features where added, it became apparent that this was more than just a profile page, but by that time it was too late.

I want to roll back time. Go into facebook knowing the exposure it will get, and remove all those unwanted pictures, wall post, bumpers stickers and “friends” that I no longer associate myself with as they happen. If I tried doing that now, it would take days. Shouldn’t I have that right as a user? If I delete my account, and create a new one, will it let me use my name still? Maybe that’s all it would take, but I’d feel much safer hitting a button that says “your junk will be gone now, continue?”. If the users truly have control over  their content, this shouldn’t be an issue. Will we ever be so lucky? Are we all naive to think facebook is here for us, after all they do make their money selling our information so we can all see adds created “just for us”. I’ll give it another week or two.
